In the realm of hair loss treatment, many consumers have a preference for a new prescription-strength version of Rogaine orPropecia—the generic version of the drug Merck’s Propecia, the FDA’s first product to combat hair loss.
And a new study shows that Propecia can increase the rate of hair loss. For one, it’s an average of just under 30% of men’s hair loss, with a 5% drop in the number of hairs falling out during the first six months of treatment.
“There are plenty of different brands of products that offer consistent results,” said lead researcher Dr. Nachum Katlowitz, a dermatologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. “But they all offer the same hair loss benefit and the same active ingredients.”
“The goal of the study is to compare Propecia’s effectiveness to that of Proscar,” said Katlowitz. “It will be important to know whether it actually improves hair loss or slows down hair loss.”
The study, led by Dr. Katlowitz and her team at New York University, involved nearly 200 men with hair loss. The men had tried Proscar for six months and saw no change in their hair loss. However, after the men took the drug for six months, they saw a significant increase in their hair count. This is the first study that compared two drugs and demonstrated that Proscar improved hair loss in men with hair loss, but not in women. It also showed that it didn’t improve hair loss in men who had not had hair loss before.
“We didn’t see the full benefits of this,” Katlowitz said. “And there were some unexpected side effects, particularly with hair loss.”
The drugs were sold in the United States by Merck under the brand name Propecia and were approved in Canada by the FDA. The FDA approved Propecia in 1997 after Merck patented the drug. It is a non-prescription drug and is sold only in a pharmacy-like location.
The study was conducted in eight European countries. It involved men with hair loss who were taking a combination of Propecia and a drug known as finasteride, which is the active ingredient in Proscar. A study of more than 5,000 men took part in the study. In Canada, men took finasteride once a week for six months. In the United States, men took Propecia twice a week for six months.
“The results showed that there was a significant improvement in hair loss in men who had not had hair loss before,” said Katlowitz. “This is one of the first studies to show that Propecia works for men and that the effect on hair loss is not instantaneous.”
The findings were presented at the American Academy of Dermatology’ annual meeting in September 2012, which was held at the San Diego Museum of Art in the United States. The meeting was free.
The results of the study will be presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology in San Francisco on November 18, 2012. Katlowitz, who is an assistant professor of dermatology at the university, is an associate professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Diego.
A sample of hair loss patients in the study were randomly assigned to take either finasteride or a placebo for six months. Results of the study were published in The New England Journal of Medicine in November 2012.Finasteride is the generic name for Propecia, a drug that has been approved for hair loss since 1992. Propecia, which was originally developed by Merck, is sold under the name Proscar in the U. S. and is marketed to men over the age of 50.
“It is very effective,” said Dr. Katlowitz. “It has fewer side effects than Proscar, but it also has the same active ingredients.”
Finasteride is an inhibitor of type II 5-alpha reductase. It works by blocking the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone that causes hair loss. It is a more potent inhibitor of type III 5-alpha reductase, which is responsible for converting testosterone into DHT.
Finasteride is sold in two dosages: 5mg and 1mg. It is the most common dosage in the U. S., with 1.25 mg being the standard dosage, but 1.

Propecia Xalmed 5mg contains the same active ingredient, finasteride, as that used for male pattern baldness. Propecia Xalmed 5mg is a proven and effective treatment for male pattern baldness. The active ingredient in Propecia Xalmed 5mg is finasteride. In addition, Propecia Xalmed 5mg has been shown to be effective in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). It works by reducing the size of the prostate gland, which allows more urine to pass through it. This prostate cancer treatment is known as androgenetic alopecia.

Propecia is an FDA-approved treatment for male pattern baldness that works by reducing the amount of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. This hormone plays a crucial role in the growth of the hair follicles, causing them to grow thinner and shorter, and eventually leaving balding areas as a result. While Propecia is an effective treatment option, it's important to note that not all men with male pattern baldness will experience an improvement in their hair loss. It's important to consult with a healthcare provider to determine if Propecia is the right choice for you, and to discuss potential drug interactions or other potential side effects with your doctor.
Propecia is available in a tablet form, and it should be taken only once daily, with a gap of at least 6 weeks between doses. It is important to follow the recommended dosage and duration of treatment, as well as any changes in your hair growth patterns.
The recommended starting dose of Propecia for men with male pattern baldness is 1 mg per day, taken orally once daily for 4 weeks. The medication should be taken with food and is usually recommended for men who experience a significant decrease in their hair loss. It's important to maintain a consistent intake of the medication throughout the day, as this can help to minimize side effects and promote healthy hair growth.
The recommended starting dose for men with male pattern baldness is 0.5 mg per day, taken orally once daily for 4 weeks. The medication should be taken only once daily, with a gap of at least 6 weeks between doses. It is important to maintain a consistent intake of the medication throughout the day, as this can help to minimize side effects and promote healthy hair growth.
Like all medications, Propecia can cause side effects, such as:
While Propecia can be an effective treatment for male pattern baldness, there are a few potential side effects that should be carefully considered:
If you experience any of these side effects while taking Propecia, it's important to consult with a healthcare provider and discuss them with your doctor. They can also help you understand how to manage these side effects and monitor you for any adverse reactions or interactions with other medications you may be taking.
Propecia is a medication used to treat male pattern baldness, a condition that is thought to affect the development and growth of new hair. It works by reducing the levels of DHT in the body, which helps in reducing the progression of hair loss.
Propecia works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which is responsible for converting testosterone into DHT. By blocking this conversion, it reduces the amount of DHT in the body, which reduces the chances of hair loss.
Studies have shown that over 80% of men with male pattern baldness show improvements in their hair growth after taking Propecia. It's important to note that this treatment is typically considered safe and effective for most men, and it will not cause any negative side effects.
Propecia contains a medicine called finasteride. This belongs to a group of medicinescalled Type II ‘5-alpha reductase inhibitors’.
Propecia is used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (also known as androgeneticalopecia). Propecia increases hair growth on the scalp and prevents further hair loss inmen. Men with mild to moderate, but not complete hair loss, can benefit from usingPropecia.
How does the hair on your head grow?On average your hair grows about 1 centimetre (half an inch) each month. Hair growsfrom hair follicles, which are located under your skin.
A single scalp hair grows continuously for 2-4 years (growth phase) and then stopsgrowing for 2-4 months (rest phase). After this the hair falls out. In its place a newhealthy hair begins to grow, and the cycle is repeated. The hairs on your scalp arealways in different stages of this cycle so it is normal to lose scalp hair every day.
What is male pattern hair loss?
Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning of thehair on the scalp, often resulting in a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of thehead. This condition is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic factors and aparticular hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone).
DHT causes a decrease in the growth phase and thinning of the hair (see picture). Thisleads to male pattern hair loss. These changes can start to occur in some men in their20s and become more common with age. Once hair loss has occurred over a longperiod of time, the hair may be permanently lost.

For example you have prostate problems or a enlarged prostate. You may be taking into account the effect of another hormone (DHT) and/or the effect of surgery (including hair transplant surgery).
